How to keep protective styles healthy

How to keep protective styles healthy

Braids and twists protect your hair only if you look after the hair underneath. Five habits that make the difference.

Protective styles earn their name only when the hair underneath is cared for. Here is what we tell every client leaving the chair in braids or twists.

1. Keep the scalp clean

Dilute a gentle shampoo in an applicator bottle and cleanse along the partings every 10–14 days. Rinse well and let the braids dry fully.

2. Moisture, then seal

Mist with a light leave-in, then seal with a few drops of oil. Our Hair Growth Oil is designed for exactly this.

3. Sleep in satin

A double-lined bonnet or a satin pillowcase stops friction, frizz and moisture loss.

4. Do not overstay

Six to eight weeks is the sweet spot. Beyond that, build-up and tension start to work against you.

5. Take-down with care

Book a take-down slot or take your time at home with conditioner and a detangling brush. Never rip.

Members of the Protective Style Maintenance club get a monthly edge refresh and scalp treatment built in.
